I’m equally in awe, in love, in crisis, devoted and devastated, frantically searching for common ground, humor, humanity in every gas station, hotel lobby, and hiking trail. Met an actual angel yesterday in Saltburn on the Sea. Paul used to be in the coast guard, but now he spends every day walking up and down this cliff trail chatting with anyone who looks like they’re having a rough moment. He’s made these plaques — some warning about the cliff erosion, but most of them are reminders of how precious and beautiful this life is. Sadly this is a cliff where a lot of people have taken their lives by jumping off, and Paul tries to help people reconsider and then drives them to the local hospital to get help. He’s talked five people off the cliff this month. Thank you Paul, and all the other angels out there helping us all take a step back from the edge.
